COMMON LAND SIZE MEASUREMENTS:
These are the most common measurements of metric area (smallest to largest):
- Square Millimeter
- Square Centimeter
- Square Meter
- Hectare
- Square Kilometer
Square Millimeter:
A square millimeter is millimeters × millimeters, which is written mm2.
A millimeter is one-thousandth of a meter (1/1000 meter), so a square millimeter is also:
1 × 1 = 1 of a square meter
1,000 1,000 1,000,000
In other words a square millimeter is one-millionth of a square meter.
So, a square meter has 1,000,000 square millimeters.
Square Centimeter:
A square centimeter is centimeter × centimeter, which is written cm2.
A centimeter is one-hundredth of a meter (1/100 meter), so a square centimeter is also:
1 × 1 = 1 of a square meter
100 100 10,000
In other words a square centimeter is one-ten-thousandth of a square meter.
So a square meter has 10,000 square centimeters.
Square Meter:
The square meter is the basic unit of area of the Metric System
Area is length by length, so a square that is 1 meter on each side is 1 square meter.
You could have other shapes (such as a rectangle that is ½ a meter by 2 meters) that also make 1 square meter.
The Unit is meters × meters, which is written m2 (square meters).
Example: How big is a 2 X 3 rectangle?
2 m × 3 m = 6 m2 (i.e 6 square meters)
In Uganda, land is measured in the following units, Hectares, Acres, Decimals, Meters; feet. These measurements vary depending on the various regions with in the country.
In the central region feet is the standard measure, while for North and western region, Metres is the standard Measure.
Hectare
This is the large land size and is the standard measure used in the country more especially with the Ministry of lands and all land documents carry out their measurements in hectares.
A hectare (ha) is an area equal to a square that is 100 meters on each side.
So a hectare has 100 m × 100 m = 10,000 m2 (square meters).
328 ft x 328ft----------1 hectare
Hectares are commonly used to measure land.
Some Examples;
A square meter is about:
- half the area of a doorway
A hectare is about:
two and a half acres
2.471 acres (to 3 decimal places)
- 100,000 square feet
- more precisely 107,639 square feet
Acre
An acre is a standard unit, it's the second largest and second to hectares. It is the most familiar method used within the country and it's almost equivalent to the size of a standard football field.
However an acre can also be measured according to the following sizes:
165 ft. x 264 ft.
198 ft. x 220 ft.
660 ft. x 66 ft.
or any rectangular tract, the product of the length & width of which totals 43,560 sq.ft.
Decimals
This is a more frequently used measure; it follows an acre in size. A decimal is a numeral system that has ten as its base. In relations to land measurements, a decimal constitutes some fraction of an acre which includes:
100 decimals---------- acre (200 ft by 200ft)
50 decimals---------½ acre (200 ft by 100 ft)
12.5 decimals----------¼ acre (100 ft by 50 ft)
Metres
A meter is the International System of Units (SI) unit of displacement or length. It is one of the units used to measure land more especially in the Northern and Easter region and even in the up country districts though it is not commonly used here in Kampala and the surrounding central regions.
1 meters...................3.28100ft
1 meter.......................0.001 kilometres
Standard plot sizes:
According to Uganda`s land divisions, the appropriate size for a house construction is 100 x 50 ft(12.5 decimals) which can accommodate a standard house with a small compound.
To understand this better lets look at this division a land into various plots which is equivalent to the size of a football field.
In land division, the sides are measured as Length x width (L x W ) whereby the width remains the constant as the length is being split:
Acre - Feets - Decimals:
1 acre----------- 200 x 200ft....................100 decimals
½ acre------------100ft x 200 ft................50 decimals.
¼ acre------------100 x 100 ft---------------25 decimals.
50 x 100 ft-----------------12.5 decimals.
Conversion units:
1 acre...........................0.4046856 hectares
1 hectare......................2.4710538 acres
1 foot...........................0.30480 meters.
1 meters......................3.28100ft
1 km.............................1000 meters
1 meter.........................0.001 kilometres
1 mile...........................1.60900 kilometres
1 km..............................0.62140 miles
1 feet............................0.00030 kilometres
1 kilometres..................3281 feet
Length : width
200ft x 200 ft ............................0.9182736455463728. Acres. ( 100 decimals).
200 ft x 100 ft............................0.4591 acres ( 50 decimals ).
100 ft x 100 ft............................0.2295684113865932 acres.
